In an unexpected turn of events, power couple Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness have announced they are separating after nearly three decades of marriage.
The pair revealed the split in a joint statement to People magazine on Sunday, stating that though their romance has come to an end, they remain committed to co-parenting their two children — son Oscar, 23, and daughter Ava, 18.
“We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth. Our family has been and always will be our highest priority,” the statement read.
Jackman, 54, and Furness, 67, first crossed paths on the set of the Australian TV show “Corelli” in 1995. They tied the knot just one year later in 1996.
Throughout their 27-year union, the couple weathered countless rumors of trouble in paradise. However, they consistently gushed over one another in interviews and shared loving tributes on social media. As recently as April, Jackman raved about his wife on their anniversary, writing on Instagram, “Your laughter, your spirit, generosity, humor, cheekiness, courage and loyalty is an incredible gift to me.”
While the split marks the end of a long-running Hollywood love story, it appears the separation was completely amicable. “We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives,” the statement concluded.
For Furness, the breakup concludes her second marriage. The actress-activist has dedicated much of her life’s work to adoption advocacy, inspired by her and Jackman’s experience adopting their two children.
